The government has launched its ‘Haalu Kihineh?’ programme in Dhaalu Atoll, as part of a nationwide initiative to identify and support individuals and families in vulnerable situations.
The Ministry of Social and Family Development stated that teams will visit households across the islands of Dhaalu Atoll to assess those in need of special assistance from the state. The visits aim to map out vulnerable populations and offer targeted support.
In preparation for the implementation, the Ministry has held discussions with the Kudahuvadhoo Council to coordinate efforts. The meeting focused on ways to provide support and services to individuals and families identified through the programme.
The Ministry plans to extend the ‘Haalu Kihineh?’ programme to Faafu Atoll later this month. It is also expected to be introduced in all islands of Meemu, Alifu Alifu, and Alifu Dhaalu Atolls before the end of the year. The government’s target is to roll out the initiative across all atolls of the Maldives by year-end.
According to Deputy Minister Mariyam Lahufa, the Ministry is already offering prompt support to those identified as vulnerable under the programme. Assistance includes access to job opportunities and short-term training courses aimed at improving livelihoods.
As of May this year, over 14,000 households have been visited. Among the most common issues raised by the public are housing shortages, limited access to medical care, difficulties in securing financial assistance through the social security system, challenges in consulting doctors, and barriers to importing medication from abroad.
