In a recent address on the Rayyithunaa Eku podcast, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed the Government’s unwavering commitment to completing the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), describing it as the nation’s top infrastructure priority.

The President announced that one of the first actions taken during the transition period was a comprehensive review of the airport development project, emphasising its pivotal role in the administration’s economic and strategic agenda.

The terminal’s completion, scheduled to coincide with the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence, is expected to usher in a new era of opportunity. President Muizzu highlighted the transformative impact the terminal will have on tourism, connectivity, and national revenue, describing the airport as ‘the country’s most vital economic asset.’

He also paid tribute to the longstanding efforts of previous Heads of State, acknowledging their collective contributions to the airport’s growth. In doing so, the President emphasised continuity and national unity in the country’s development journey.

The discussion extended beyond VIA, touching upon regional airport projects underway across the country. These, he noted, are part of a broader vision to improve domestic connectivity and spur equitable development across the islands.

As the Maldives prepares to commemorate its independence, President Muizzu shared a personal reflection, expressing his aspiration for a nation characterised by harmony and unity. “True independence,” he remarked, “is not merely political. It is the forging of a society bound by compassion, cohesion, and a shared commitment to national progress.”
