PM Modi to Visit Maldives as Guest of Honour for Independence Day Celebrations

The President’s Office has announced that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Maldives from 25–26 July, at the invitation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The visit coincides with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations on 26 July.

This will be Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to the Maldives since President Muizzu assumed office. He has previously visited the country twice. The visit also marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and India.

During the visit, President Muizzu and Prime Minister Modi will hold high-level talks on key bilateral and regional issues. The leaders will also inaugurate several joint projects and witness the signing of multiple Memoranda of Understanding, aimed at strengthening cooperation across various sectors of mutual interest.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that Prime Minister Modi will be the Guest of Honour at the Maldives’ Independence Day celebrations. The two leaders will review progress on the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, which was adopted during President Muizzu’s state visit to India in October 2024. India noted that the visit highlights the significance it places on its maritime neighbour under the “Neighbourhood First” policy and Vision MAHASAGAR.

Ahead of his visit to the Maldives, Prime Minister Modi will travel to the United Kingdom from 23–24 July, at the invitation of British Prime Minister, The Rt. Hon. Sir Keir Starmer. This will be Modi’s fourth official visit to the UK.
