Justice Abdulla Hameed has assumed leadership of the Supreme Court as acting head following the retirement of Chief Justice Ahmed Muathasim Adnan, the Supreme Court announced today.

The court noted that Justice Hameed will oversee the court’s work until a new Chief Justice is appointed, and requested that all official correspondence be addressed to him.

Chief Justice Muathasim, who officially retired today, was first appointed to the Supreme Court bench in December 2019 and became Chief Justice shortly after.

Justice Hameed was appointed to the Supreme Court bench by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu after receiving parliamentary approval last month. In the parliamentary vote, Hameed secured 60 votes in favour, while another nominee, Mohamed Saleem, received 61 votes. Their appointments followed the dismissal of Justices Azmiralda Zahir and Mahaz Ali Zahir by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on 17 May, after the JSC found the pair had interfered in a criminal case involving Azmiralda’s husband.

Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Hameed served on the High Court from 2007 until his dismissal in June 2022. The JSC had removed him on allegations of accepting government flats from the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen in exchange for favourable rulings—an allegation Hameed has consistently denied.
