The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has awarded contracts to resume mosque construction on two islands where projects had stalled under the previous administration.

The construction of mosques in Muraidhoo, Haa Alif Atoll, and Gemanafushi, Gaafu Alif Atoll, was initially contracted to Evosun Maldives Pvt Ltd. However, due to prolonged delays and incomplete work, progress on both sites came to a standstill.

To move the projects forward, the ministry has now reassigned the contracts to two new companies. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been tasked with completing the mosque in Muraidhoo, while the Road Development Corporation (RDC) will undertake the mosque construction in Gemanafushi.

Each mosque will be able to accommodate up to 300 worshippers and will include an ablution area, minaret, library, landscaped surroundings, and boundary walls. Both buildings are designed to incorporate renewable energy systems for electricity generation.

The projects are being financed through the state budget at a combined cost of USD 7.7 million. The Muraidhoo mosque is expected to be completed within 365 days, while the Gemanafushi mosque is scheduled for completion in 240 days.

According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, 13 mosques are planned to open across the Maldives this year, including an Islamic Centre in Dhidhdhoo, Haa Alif Atoll. In addition, the ministry plans to award contracts for the construction of Islamic Centres in four islands and mosques in ten islands during the year.
