Prisoners to Receive Higher Daily Wages for Work Programmes
The Maldives Correctional Services has increased the daily allowance for prisoners engaged in work programmes for the first time in 25 years, raising the minimum rate from MVR 30 to MVR 50.
The revised rates came into effect on 16 July and apply to incarcerated individuals participating in various work activities within the prison system. The previous allowance of MVR 30 per day was introduced in 2000 and had remained unchanged since then.
According to the Maldives Correctional Services, the new structure includes graded compensation based on the nature of the work.
The entry-level category, classified as Grade One, now earns MVR 50 per day. Higher grades are eligible for incremental increases of MVR 10, with the highest category earning MVR 120 daily.
The updated payment scheme is intended to reflect the level of responsibility and effort associated with different types of prison labour.
