President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed as the Chief Justice of the Maldives. The appointment was made during a formal ceremony held today morning at the President’s Office, where the President presented the official letter of appointment.

Parliament approved Ghanee Mohamed’s nomination the previous day, with 62 Members of Parliament voting in favour and none voting against during the sitting.

The appointment was made in accordance with Article 147 of the Maldivian Constitution. The oath of office was administered by Supreme Court Justice Uz Abdulla Hameed, following which Chief Justice Ghanee signed the official declaration.

Ghanee Mohamed holds an LLB (Hons.) in Law and Islamic Jurisprudence from Al-Azhar University, Egypt (2000). He also holds a Master’s degree in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Shariah Policy (2022), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (2024) from the Islamic University of Maldives. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Legislative Policy.

Prior to his appointment, Ghanee served as President of the Tax Appeal Tribunal. He has held academic positions at the Islamic University of Maldives, Villa College, and Zikura College.

He was first appointed to the Supreme Court in June 2018, and previously served as a judge at both the Civil Court and the High Court. However, in September 2019, he was removed from the Supreme Court bench following a vote in Parliament during the administration of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The removal came after a Judicial Service Commission (JSC) inquiry into decisions issued by the then-bench, including the disqualification of 12 sitting parliamentarians and the Court’s intervention in ongoing JSC proceedings involving allegations against former Justice Abdulla Didi.

Ghanee was among the candidates who applied for two recent Supreme Court vacancies, although those seats were filled by High Court Judge Mohamed Saleem and former Judge Abdulla Hameed.
