President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has designated Alifu Alifu Ranfaru Lagoon as part of Alifu Alifu Maalhos on Thursday, fulfilling a commitment made to the local community.
The decision, formalised through Presidential Decree No. 20/2025, was issued under the authority granted by Section 134(a) of the Decentralisation Act (Act No. 7/2010).
With this change, Ranfaru Lagoon has been officially added to the list of inhabited islands in the Maldives as part of Maalhos. The President’s Office said the appendix of Presidential Decree No. 2/2025, which establishes inhabited islands in the country, has been updated to reflect the decision.
President Muizzu made the pledge during his visit to several islands in Alifu Alifu and Kaafu Atoll in December 2024, in a meeting with the Maalhos Island Council and the Women’s Development Committee.
