The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) will begin exporting fish directly from Addu from next month, eliminating the need to transport catches from Seenu Atoll to Huvadhu Atoll.

In a statement issued last night, MIFCO said the change is part of ongoing efforts to improve services by upgrading machinery, enhancing infrastructure, and boosting overall productivity.

Fish purchased from Addu fishermen will now be exported from the Addu Fisheries Complex, established in 2018, instead of being sent to the Kooddoo Fisheries Complex in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, operational since 1996. The company’s oldest facility, the Felivaru Fisheries Complex, was established in 1977.

“Improving the ability to add value in the Maldives for purchased fish is one of the main objectives of the government and MIFCO,” the company said.

MIFCO also confirmed discussions to take over the Ensis Canary Processing Facility and announced plans to open the Thinadhoo fish processing centre in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll by the end of 2026.
