Ahead of the rally, the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, urged the public to remain steadfast in their support for Palestine until the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. He highlighted the enduring bond between the Maldives and Palestine, and called for the immediate removal of restrictions and the opening of borders to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Dr Shaheem condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza as inhumane and criticised international powers for supporting them. He described the defence of Palestinian rights as a national and moral obligation and encouraged Maldivians to continue advocating for Palestine until the realisation of a sovereign state.
The minister also called on citizens to contribute to Palestinian efforts through verbal support or financial contributions according to individual capacity.
The rally brought together a diverse crowd, including a number of cabinet ministers, Palestinians from the Maldives, and Maldivians young and old.
Pro-Palestine rallies were held across numerous islands in the Maldives, in addition to the main one in the capital.
