Sri Lanka’s FitsAir has become the fourth airline to begin operations from Velana International Airport’s (VIA) new international passenger terminal.

The inaugural arrival was marked with a traditional water salute and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Passengers arriving on the flight were welcomed with Maldivian cultural performances, while departing travellers experienced streamlined check-in procedures at the new facility.

Senior officials, including Visit Maldives Corporation’s CEO and MD Ibrahim Shiuree, Maldives Airports Company Limited’s (MACL) CEO and MD Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, and Fits Holidays Director Anah Kassim, were present to receive passengers.

FitsAir joins BeOnd, Air Arabia and Maldivian in operating from the terminal, which was officially inaugurated on 26 July. According to MACL, the new terminal will become fully operational over the next three months, following international best practices.

The transition will take place in phases, beginning with Maldivian operating exclusively for a two-week period. In the next stage, narrow-body flights from other airlines, carrying up to 200 passengers, will be introduced. Seven airlines have already been designated to operate these services.

MACL expects the entire terminal to be fully functional by the start of the upcoming tourist season.
