President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has submitted nominees to Parliament for appointment to the Civil Service Commission (CSC), including its current president Mohamed Nasih.
The list of names was read out in today’s parliamentary sitting. Alongside Nasih, the nominees are Dr. Hussain Faiz, Dr. Dheeba Moosa, Badhriyya Moosa, Dr. Fathimath Muna and Aiminath Ummu Kulsum.
The terms of CSC president Mohamed Nasih and members Mohamed Farshath and Fathimath Shareef are set to expire on 3 September of this year.
Nasih was first appointed to the CSC in September 2020 during the previous administration, when Parliament was dominated by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). In November last year, after the People’s National Congress (PNC) secured a supermajority, no-confidence motions were filed against him over allegations of misconduct. Following an inquiry, the relevant committee dismissed the allegations and recommended his removal. The PNC-majority Parliament subsequently voted to keep him in office, while members of some other independent institutions were removed on the same day.
The nominations have now been referred to the Committee on Independent Institutions, which is tasked with vetting and overseeing appointments to bodies such as the CSC, Elections Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission, and some other independent offices established under the Constitution.
