The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance cooperation in disaster management and resilience-building across the Maldives.

The agreement, finalised on Sunday, establishes a framework for sustained collaboration aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness, emergency response, and post-crisis recovery. The NDMA described the partnership as a crucial step in protecting lives and livelihoods across the country.

Under the accord, the two organisations will jointly implement initiatives to improve national disaster response capabilities. These include coordinated delivery of humanitarian assistance, streamlined rehabilitation efforts, and more efficient recovery operations.

The agreement also provides for joint training programmes and the systematic exchange of operational information. These measures are intended to build institutional capacity and foster greater resilience within communities, particularly in the Maldives’ geographically dispersed atolls.

The NDMA said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to reducing disaster risks and ensuring stronger protection for citizens during times of crisis. Officials expressed confidence that combined efforts with the MRC would lead to tangible improvements in the country’s disaster management systems.
