Post Mortem Ordered for Man Who Died in Police Custody
Police have confirmed that a post mortem will be carried out on Ahmed Afrah, 48, from G. Zamia, who died while in police custody.
Afrah was arrested last Friday on suspicion of a drug-related offence and was being held at Atholhu Vehi in Male’ after a court placed him in remand for 30 days.
He was found unconscious in his cell at 5:50am yesterday and was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Authorities have stated that Afrah’s body will be transferred to India for a post mortem, although the date of the transfer has not yet been confirmed.
The court’s remand order indicated that Afrah was being held due to drug addiction and an urgent need for treatment. It also noted that he had a prior criminal record, and urine tests conducted on the day of his arrest were positive for multiple narcotics.
Police have shared information regarding Afrah’s death with the Human Rights Commission of Maldives and the National Integrity Commission. The Professional Standards Command of the Police is also conducting an internal investigation.
