Gov’t Awards Contracts For Waste Management Centres On Four Islands

The government has awarded contracts to three private companies to construct waste management centres on four islands as part of its nationwide programme to improve waste management and environmental protection.

According to the Ministry of Environment, the contracts were issued under the “Environmental Improvement in All Inhabited Islands of the Maldives” initiative and the Waste Management Project, which is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The project was officially inaugurated today.
The waste management centres will be established in K. Maafushi, K. Thulusdhoo, ADh. Mahibadhoo, and ADh. Hanyameedhoo.
At a ceremony held at the Saafu Rajje Building, the ministry handed over three separate contracts. V-Ava Investments Pvt Ltd was awarded the contract to build centres in Thulusdhoo and Maafushi at a cost of MVR 5.8 million, with completion expected within four months. Sunny Land Investment Pvt Ltd received the contract for Mahibadhoo, valued at MVR 4.3 million, also with a four-month completion timeline. Elite International Pvt Ltd was awarded the Hanyameedhoo project, worth MVR 4.7 million, with work expected to conclude in five months.
State Minister Mohamed Faiz signed the agreements on behalf of the Ministry of Environment, while company representatives signed on behalf of their respective firms.
The ministry also noted that some islands had already received waste management equipment, including garbage trucks, canning machines, and wood chippers, which have been provided to local councils to strengthen ongoing efforts.
