The Ministry of Health has awarded contracts to the Road Development Corporation (RDC) and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for the development of several island health centres.

Under the agreement, RDC will construct additional buildings for health centres in Baarah and Maarandhoo in Haa Alif Atoll. Each project, valued at MVR 11.5 million, will expand the facilities to include a ward, nursing booth, laboratory, procedure room, private rooms, a garage, and a warehouse.

MTCC has been contracted for four projects, including the construction of new health centre buildings in K. Kashidhoo and A. Dh. Dhidhoo, as well as expansions of health centres in K. Huraa and V. Fulidhoo. The contracts were signed by senior officials of the ministry and the company last week.

The Huraa and Fulidhoo health centre projects, valued at MVR 27.2 million and MVR 27 million respectively, are expected to be completed within one year. The Dhidhoo health centre project, worth MVR 12 million, will be completed in nine months and will include a public health unit, multipurpose hall, ward, nurses’ booth, laboratory, procedure room, private rooms, a garage, and a warehouse. The Kashidhoo health centre expansion, costing MVR 7.1 million, will also add similar facilities.

In a separate development, Chartered Engineering, a private company, has been awarded a contract worth MVR 917,484 to upgrade the Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital to a tertiary-level facility.

The awarding of health sector projects to state-owned companies has drawn public criticism, with concerns raised over whether the contracts align with the companies’ official mandates.
