The government has expanded the ‘Haalu Kihineh?’ programme to 16 atolls, with Faafu Atoll being the latest to benefit from the initiative.
The programme, launched in May last year, is designed to strengthen connections between the state and communities by assessing the well-being of residents, identifying those in need, and providing essential services.
The Ministry of Social and Family Development is carrying out the programme in collaboration with public service institutions, relevant agencies, atoll councils, island councils, and Women’s Development Committees. The aim is to visit every household across the country within a year to identify individuals requiring state support.
Since its introduction, the programme has been implemented in all but four atolls. The Ministry has indicated that it expects to expand to the remaining atolls within the year. Assistance provided through the initiative includes support for vulnerable families and the provision of job opportunities and training.
The programme began in Hulhumalé and has since reached a wide network of islands. In Faafu Atoll, ministry staff have already visited 95 per cent of households in Feeali and Bilehddhoo. Officials say the initiative is part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader vision of fostering a compassionate society and building trust between government institutions and the people.
