A Dutch woman has been remanded in custody for 30 days after being arrested on suspicion of smuggling and trafficking drugs into the Maldives.
The woman, identified as Brittany Adofo Boafo, was detained at the airport after five kilograms of drugs were found in her luggage. During her remand hearing, it was revealed that she is pregnant, and the court instructed the Investigation Officer to monitor her condition closely.
Her lawyer told the court that she had been asked to cooperate in a controlled delivery but was unable to comply, citing unfamiliarity with the process and claiming that her luggage had been swapped. The lawyer also requested that the investigation be expedited in light of her pregnancy.
The court concluded that sufficient evidence had been presented to pursue charges against her.
Drug abuse continues to be a serious social challenge in the Maldives. In response to growing concerns, the government has announced measures to strengthen laws, including the President’s call to incorporate the death penalty for those convicted of drug smuggling or trafficking.
