The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced plans to hold a series of protests next month, citing concerns over press freedom and constitutional rights.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s national council on Monday evening, following a resolution submitted by Mohamed Thoriq, the MDP president for Manadhoo constituency. In his proposal, Thoriq called on the party to mobilise against what he described as government attempts to restrict independent media and conceal corruption. The council endorsed the resolution, confirming that the first protest will take place on 3 October.
During the meeting, former president and MDP leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih alleged that President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration was working to suppress the media. He argued that recent proposals in parliament represented a serious threat to press freedom, claiming they aimed to bring all news outlets under state control.
Other council members echoed similar concerns, highlighting what they see as growing pressure on journalists and the wider media sector.
