The first phase of the Integrated Logistics Terminal project has been completed on Thilafushi island in Kaafu Atoll, marking a major step towards expanding container handling capacity in the Maldives.

The initial stage, carried out by the state-owned Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), focused on addressing congestion at the Malé Commercial Harbour and the Hulhumalé International Terminal. Work included the construction of a 60-metre inner breakwater, a 15-metre quay wall, and the levelling of the project site.

These developments provide the groundwork for a container depot with capacity for 2,000 containers, which will be developed in two phases. Once MTCC’s foundational work is complete, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) will take over to establish workshops, office facilities, and lighting infrastructure at the site.

The new terminal is being developed as a long-term solution to space limitations at existing ports. The project’s phased plan includes relocating operations from the Malé Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi, enabling the Hulhumalé port to be repurposed as a transshipment hub. Plans also include shifting the North Harbour and T-Jetty facilities in Malé to the new terminal.

Authorities expect the completed project to ease cargo clearance and resolve long-standing capacity issues that have hindered port operations. Full relocation to the Thilafushi facility is targeted for completion within the next two years.
