Nine airports previously operated by the Regional Airports Company Limited have been officially transferred to the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), following a government decision aimed at reducing state expenditure.

The Cabinet approved the transfer of the Regional Airports Company to MACL on 1 September last year. The handover was completed two weeks ago, with MACL confirming that it has now assumed full operational responsibility for the airports.

According to MACL, the airports were found to be in poor condition at the time of transfer. The company is currently assessing their state and procuring necessary materials to carry out development and improvement works.

Although MACL has taken over the operations, the liquidation process of the Regional Airports Company has not yet been finalised.

The government has stated that merging the two entities will lower costs and strengthen overall airport operations. The Minister of Economic Development, Mohamed Saeed, highlighted that the government’s economic reform measures have been positively noted by international financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
