The Ministry of Social and Family Development has introduced a certificate-level Sign Language course in collaboration with the Maldives National University (MNU).
According to MNU, the six-month programme is open to anyone over the age of 18 who has completed their O-Levels or Certificate Level 2 of the Sign Language Courses.
The ministry previously offered an online sign language programme for state-owned companies and institutions, aimed at enabling employees to communicate with people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Over 130 individuals have taken part in these earlier programmes, the ministry added.

Officials said expanding access to sign language education will help make it a mainstream form of communication, rather than one used only by people who are deaf or their families.
