The Maldives’ role as a growing logistics hub has strengthened further, with sea-to-air cargo services reaching 18 countries in August, according to figures released by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).
The service, jointly operated by MPL and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), has been a key driver of economic activity since its launch in May. In August, a total of 291 tonnes of cargo, equivalent to 77 TEU containers, were transited from sea to air.
Nine international airlines participated in the operation, including Virgin Atlantic, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Azerbaijan Airlines, Saudi Airlines, Swiss Airlines and ITA Airways. The consignments were transported to a diverse range of destinations, including Italy, the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Canada, Greece, the United Kingdom, Palestine, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal, Kosovo, Turkey, Austria, the Czech Republic and Ireland.
The initiative offers a faster and more efficient option for transporting goods, bridging the cost benefits of sea freight with the speed of air transport. It has been particularly significant in facilitating the transshipment of high-value and time-sensitive products from South Asia.
The continued expansion of the service highlights the Maldives’ growing potential in the regional and global logistics industry. Officials anticipate further growth as additional airlines and countries are integrated into the network, strengthening efforts to diversify the national economy.
