The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Maldivians to avoid non-essential travel to Nepal due to ongoing protests in the country.

The advisory, issued yesterday, follows reports of escalating demonstrations after social media restrictions were imposed and allegations of government corruption emerged. Protesters have reportedly set fire to parts of the legislature and attacked senior officials.

The ministry urged Maldivians to refrain from travelling to Nepal unless necessary, exercise caution in Kathmandu, avoid conflict zones and public gatherings, and follow instructions from local authorities, the Maldives High Commission in India, and the Foreign Ministry.

A significant number of Maldivians, including medical students, are currently in Nepal. The ministry confirmed it is coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure their safety and is closely monitoring the situation.

The High Commission of the Maldives in India and the ministry are providing assistance to Maldivians in Nepal and will continue to offer support if the situation worsens.

Maldivians requiring assistance may contact the Maldives High Commission in India at +91 99100 40786 or the Foreign Ministry hotline at 7983400.
