Gov’t Disburses Over MVR 365 Million in Student Loans

The government has disbursed MVR 365.27 million in student loans as of 11 September, according to statistics released by the Higher Education Ministry.

Since last year, a total of MVR 1.07 billion has been provided in student loans to 1,226 students, including 666 female and 560 male students. Of this, MVR 365.27 million has been disbursed to 396 students – 243 female and 153 male – since January 2025.

A total of 964 students who received government loans have graduated since last year, including 382 graduates this year. Currently, 1,733 students are pursuing studies under the state-funded loan scheme across 40 countries, including the Maldives.

The Finance Ministry’s latest weekly fiscal report, released on Sunday, shows a decline in spending on student loans. The budget allocation for the scheme this year is MVR 768 million, but only MVR 351.3 million had been spent as of 4 September, down from MVR 463.9 million during the same period last year, marking a decrease of MVR 112.6 million.

Overall spending on the higher education sector has also declined. The Ministry of Higher Education’s budget for 2025 is MVR 1.36 billion, yet actual spending stands at MVR 679 million, a reduction of MVR 74.3 million compared to MVR 753.3 million spent during the same period in 2024.
