The government has announced a prohibition on the use of engine-powered vehicles in the Hulhumalé Channel Park, the waterway connecting Phase 1 and Phase 2 of Hulhumalé.

The channel is a popular site for sea sports, where jet skis and other motorised watercraft are frequently used. However, authorities have determined that continued operation of such vehicles poses safety risks for users of the Channel Park bridge, which is regularly used by children and the elderly.

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has also highlighted the channel’s role in environmental efforts, noting that it is being utilised for coral revitalisation and restoration projects. To safeguard both public safety and the environment, the restriction on motorised vehicles will come into effect on Friday.
