A National Skills and Career Expo is scheduled to take place in November to promote greater Maldivian participation in the workforce and to provide opportunities for skills development.

The event, organised by the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, is designed to increase the number of Maldivians in the labour market, strengthen workforce capabilities and empower young people through digital innovation.

The expo, branded as “Vara”, was officially inaugurated by Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed at a ceremony held at the Ministry on Sunday. It has been described as the first event of its kind in the Maldives and is expected to draw more than 15,000 participants, including job seekers, students and professionals.

The three-day expo, running from 6 to 8 November, will feature three main zones. The Career Zone will host employer booths and interview areas, while the Education Provider Zone will showcase opportunities for students, including stations from scientific and technical centres offering guidance on first-degree programmes facilitated by the Ministry. The Skills Experience Zone will allow participants to try practical skills in areas such as carpentry, electrical work and information technology.

More than 1,000 job opportunities and over 500 educational courses will be available for registration during the event. The Ministry’s newly developed Higher Education Management System portal will enable students to register and apply for courses instantly, with digital integration designed to match skills with job openings.

The Ministry has encouraged job seekers, students, employers and educational institutions to register early to take part in the expo.
