The agreement was signed in New York ahead of a meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, and his Azerbaijani counterpart, Jayhun Bayramov, on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the new arrangement builds upon existing unilateral visa-free regimes between the two countries. It also follows a visa agreement signed last year, which provided exemptions for Maldivians travelling with diplomatic and official passports for stays of up to 90 days.
The visa waiver is expected to ease travel for citizens of both nations and enhance bilateral relations.
