This year’s global theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”, highlights the importance of developing a resilient and environmentally conscious tourism sector.
The welcoming event, held at Velana International Airport and across regional airports, featured cultural performances and traditional elements to greet arriving visitors. MACL stated that regional airports play a crucial role in the country’s transport network, facilitating the transfer of tourists to various resorts. Approximately 18 percent of tourists who arrive at Velana International Airport continue their journey through regional airports.
The government has set a target of attracting 2.3 million tourists in 2025. So far this year, more than 1.5 million visitors have arrived in the Maldives, with over 7,000 tourists expected to arrive on Saturday alone.
