The United States has donated specialised equipment to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) to strengthen its special operations capabilities.

The handover ceremony was held at the Bandaara Barracks auditorium yesterday. U.S. Ambassador Hugo Yon formally presented the equipment, which was received by Chief of Defence Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy on behalf of the MNDF.

The donation includes combat diving gear, personnel equipment for the MNDF Special Forces and Special Operations Group, as well as other operational tools. According to the MNDF, the equipment will enhance its ability to conduct special operations and contribute to national security.

Ambassador Yon highlighted the importance of continued defence cooperation between the United States and the Maldives, reaffirming the U.S. government’s commitment to supporting future defence initiatives.

Major General Hilmy expressed appreciation for the assistance, noting that the new equipment will improve the mobility and readiness of the MNDF. He described the donation as an important step in strengthening the country’s defence capacity.

The ceremony was attended by senior MNDF officers and representatives from the U.S. Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS).

The Maldives has previously received similar defence assistance from other partner nations, including heavy vehicles from India and a naval vessel from Turkey.
