Previously, travellers were required to fill out a physical arrival card upon arrival, which had to be submitted at the airport’s Immigration counters. Indian authorities stated that the digital system aims to reduce waiting times at immigration and streamline the arrival process.

The change affects the large number of Maldivians and other foreigners travelling to India for medical treatment, holidays, work, education, or business purposes.
