The agreement was signed during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing tour of Alifu Dhaalu Atoll. Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer signed the contract on behalf of the government, while MACL’s Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed signed on behalf of the company.
Dredging work for Maafaru Falhu officially commenced following the signing ceremony. The lagoon, situated between Mahibadhoo and Omadhoo in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, was brought under the jurisdiction of the Mahibadhoo Island Council in April last year.
In December, President Muizzu met with the Mahibadhoo Island Council and instructed the council to gather community input in drafting the master plan for Maafaru Falhu.
The government has identified seven locations across the country for development as urban centres. These include Ungoofaaru in Raa Atoll, Eydhafushi in Baa Atoll, Naifaru in Lhaviyani Atoll, Mahibadhoo in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, Nilandhoo in Faafu Atoll, Kudahuvadhoo in Dhaalu Atoll and Fonadhoo in Laamu Atoll.
