President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has amended the questions to be asked in the upcoming referendum on the jurisdictional composition of Addu City.

In a decree issued yesterday, President Muizzu revised an earlier decree from 6 October. The updated version asks residents of Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, and Feydhoo whether each island should have its own separate council.

The original decree had additionally sought residents’ opinions on whether they preferred to have a combined council with Hithadhoo, asking each island, respectively, about such an arrangement.

The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) earlier announced that the public referendum would be held in Addu City on 25 October to decide whether the three islands should be separated and granted independent island councils. Voting will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with official results expected on 26 October.

Meanwhile, MP for Central Hithadhoo, Ahmed Azaan Marzooq, has urged Addu residents to vote against the formation of separate island councils. In a post on X, he stated that Addu’s political influence stems from its size, noting it is the second most populous area in the Maldives after Malé. He warned that dividing the current Addu City Council could weaken this collective strength.
