The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into a shop break-in in Addu City’s Hulhudhoo district, during which two milk powder cans were stolen.
According to the Police, the incident occurred early Friday morning, with CCTV footage showing the break-in taking place at approximately 2:49am. The case was reported to the Police at around 7:17am. The footage, which is circulating on social media, shows a masked individual arriving at the shop, scouting the area for bystanders, and forcing open the door before entering.
The thief is seen on a separate camera inside the shop, stealing two 1,800-gram milk powder cans and a chocolate bar before leaving. Police said the thief also took MVR 150 in coins.
Authorities confirmed that the door was forced open to gain entry and that the case remains under investigation.
In the Maldives, there have been previous instances where individuals convicted of stealing small items, such as bottles of Rihaakuru (Maldivian fish paste), have received jail sentences.
