The Male’ City Council has launched an initiative to plant coconut palms along the western coastline of the capital, including the area surrounding Rasfannu beach.

The coconut palm is a tree with strong cultural significance in the Maldives and is well suited to the local climate.

During his tenure as mayor, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu introduced date palms across Male’, including in public parks and in front of the new international passenger terminal at Velana International Airport. Some of these date palms, which are not native to the Maldives, have shown signs of deterioration.

Incumbent Mayor Adam Azim has shifted the focus toward planting coconut palms in available open spaces. He has stated that the council aims to select trees that align with the Maldivian environment and reflect the preferences of residents. According to the mayor, there is wide public support for the planting of coconut palms.

The council does not intend to immediately replace the existing date palms. The trees will continue to be monitored and decisions on any necessary changes will be made based on their condition.

The introduction of coconut palms is expected to enhance the public space, providing a more pleasant coastal environment for residents and visitors.
