Teacher Arrested Over Alleged Abuse of Male Students

A schoolteacher from the southern Maldives has been arrested on suspicion of showing pornographic material and sexually abusing a group of male students.

According to police, the Education Ministry reported the incident on 26 October after the teacher allegedly showed a video containing pornographic content to a group of schoolboys. A 40-year-old Maldivian man was subsequently taken into custody under a court warrant the following day.

He was later remanded in police custody for 30 days following a court hearing.

The case comes shortly after another teacher was arrested in Hulhumalé on 22 October for allegedly sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl during a home tuition session. The suspect in that case, a 46-year-old Maldivian man, was also remanded for 30 days.

Under the Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sex Offenders, individuals found guilty of such crimes face prison sentences ranging from 15 to 18 years, particularly when the perpetrator holds a position of authority over the victim.
