The court ordered five days of detention for each of them, until the trial progressed and a final sentence could be heard. The court has renewed their remand sentence until their trials end.

The robbery occurred during early dawn hours last week on Monday, when a group of masked individuals threatened two bank employees and stole a suitcase containing cash as they were walking through a walk-through connecting the old terminal with the airport’s newly opened Terminal 1. The incident was reported at 4:45 a.m.

A police spokesperson noted that no police escort was present with the bank staff, as the bank had not requested security in advance.

The police still have not disclosed the total amount stolen or the identity of the bank, yet several local media outlets have reported that the staff belong to the Bank of Maldives (BML) and that over USD 100,000 was stolen.
