Gov’t to Develop Nurseries to Support Five Million Trees Initiative

The government has announced plans to establish two nurseries in Laamu Gan as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to plant five million trees across the Maldives.

An agreement has been signed between the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to develop the facilities in Gan. The project includes a 20,000-square-foot nursery and a larger 100,000-square-foot nursery.
According to the Ministry, the smaller nursery in Gan is expected to become operational by the end of this year, while the larger facility is scheduled for completion by July 2026. The nurseries are regarded as key to supporting the nationwide tree-planting effort, addressing the challenge of sourcing trees locally.
In Hulhumalé Phase II, a 55,000-square-foot nursery is being developed with assistance from the Chinese government. The facility will include a laboratory, meeting room, office space, and accommodation for workers. A delegation from the Ministry visited China earlier this year to discuss the design of the nursery and the types of trees that will be cultivated.
The Hulhumalé nursery will also serve as a centre for public awareness activities, offering educational visits for students to promote environmental learning.
