The government will introduce an annual grant of MVR 25 million from next year to support artists and individuals interested in developing their skills in the visual arts.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the initiative yesterday during a ceremony marking the second anniversary of his administration.
The President said the grant aims to create new opportunities for young people and strengthen the creative sector. He noted that exhibitions featuring local artists are held periodically across the Maldives, but many artists have expressed concern that the field does not generate sufficient income to sustain a livelihood.
Highlighting broader youth development efforts, the President said 375 young people have completed training under the government’s apprenticeship programme since 17 November 2023. He said 72 percent of those participants have secured employment, while a further 112 individuals are currently undergoing training.
President Muizzu said that many young Maldivians are actively involved in painting, and he referred to his visits to local exhibitions where he observed strong creative talent. He said the annual grant is intended to assist those entering the field as well as those looking to further develop their artistic skills.
