The announcement was made during a ceremony marking the second anniversary of the current administration, where President Dr Muizzu highlighted the centre’s strategic role in nurturing elite athletes and attracting international sporting events. He outlined a vision for the centre to serve as a foundational step towards the Maldives hosting international competitions.

President Dr Muizzu also stressed the importance of creating a competitive environment by welcoming foreign athletes to train in the Maldives, enabling local athletes to gain experience and excel on the global stage. While acknowledging the current successes of Maldivian athletes, he noted that a dedicated facility would further enhance their performance.

The planned high-performance centre reflects a substantial government commitment to supporting athletes in competitive sports. It forms part of a broader strategy to improve sports infrastructure, including the development of modern sports complexes and the pursuit of opportunities to host international tournaments in the Maldives.

In addition to elite sports facilities, the President announced that fitness and recreation centres will be completed in every region of the Maldives by next year, reaffirming the government’s focus on public health and well-being. These centres are intended to foster healthy and active communities, providing citizens with accessible spaces for exercise and recreation.

The centres, currently under construction across the archipelago, will serve as multi-functional hubs. They will accommodate a variety of indoor sports, feature dedicated aerobics studios, and house fully equipped gyms. Beyond physical activity, the facilities are designed to promote social cohesion and community engagement by offering spaces for interaction and shared activities.

The nationwide rollout of these fitness and recreation centres underscores a commitment to ensuring all communities have access to modern facilities, encouraging citizens to prioritise their health and lead more active lifestyles.
