Fayyaz Joins Ali Azim’s Mayoral Run Campaign

Former Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Fayyaz Ismail has joined the campaign of the party’s mayoral primary candidate Ali Azim.
Fayyaz, who resigned from the chairperson post this week, attended a tea party organized by Ali’s campaign team yesterday evening, along with former finance minister Ibrahim Ameer and many other MDP members who have chosen to support Ali in his mayoral run.

Besides Fayyaz, former leader of the party and former president Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has also recently endorsed Azim in his mayoral run.
Whilst Fayyaz has chosen to support Azim in his mayoral run, the two have a history of targeting accusations at each other during MDP’s split and the creation of the Democrats, a splinter group created by Nasheed after internal conflicts with former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Azim had aimed accusations at Fayyaz during the split, when the former went with Nasheed and joined the Democrats, whilst Fayyaz chose to stay in MDP.
Adam Azim, the current mayor of Male’ City, is also running with MDP’s ticket to maintain his position as mayor.
