The Education Ministry has decided to introduce new standardised school uniform colours beginning from 2027.
According to an interview Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeq gave to Mihaaru News, all government schools will choose between four approved options: red, white, and green, as in the national flag, and lastly blue. Minister said these colours already match most schools’ existing uniforms, meaning the majority will not need major changes.
The ministry also plans to revise the necktie requirement. Ties will only be mandatory from Year 7 onwards and will match each school’s selected colour.
Female students will gain more uniform options, including the choice between skirts and trousers and whether to tuck in their shirts.
The minister said the changes respond to concerns from parents and schools, adding that the standardised colour scheme should reduce uniform costs and prevent businesses from monopolising sales.
