The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has announced that a Zakat Beneficiary Card will be introduced next month to enhance essential services for poor and vulnerable individuals in the Maldives.
The initiative aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s decision to establish the Maldives Zakat House as an independent agency tasked with improving services provided to those in need.
The card has been developed jointly by the Zakat House and the Bank of Maldives and will be issued to individuals listed in the national register of Zakat beneficiaries. Its primary aim is to modernise and streamline service delivery, reducing the need for beneficiaries to visit multiple offices to receive assistance.
According to the Ministry, the card will function similarly to a Visa bank card, enabling beneficiaries to directly access support from the Zakat House. During Ramadan, it will facilitate the distribution of food aid. It may also be used to cover health expenses not provided under the Aasandha national health insurance scheme, in addition to support for food, housing and education.
