A major milestone was reached as the first completed segment of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project officially opened to the public, marking progress in modernising Malé’s ring road.

The newly rebuilt stretch—from the Local Market to the Presidential Jetty—was reopened yesterday after full renovation and fresh asphalting.

This phase included lagoon reclamation to expand the road into four lanes, with asphalt laid after widening works. Construction began in August, completing Segment 1 of the project.

The MVR 144 million redevelopment is fully funded by the state budget, with MTCC given 455 days to complete the entire ring road project.

After over three months of closure, the newly reopened segment now features four lanes, fencing, and accessible pathways, with improvements expected to ease traffic and reduce flooding through a new drainage system.

Segment 2 will now begin, targeting the southern side of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, with widening and resurfacing between the Local Market and North Harbour.

Ahead of this next stage, MTCC has launched a public consultation to gather feedback on project benefits, minimising disruptions, and shaping how the upgraded area should be used.
