Addu High School Says Student Instigated Altercation When Teacher Tried to Enforce Behavioural Codes

Addu High School has stated that the altercation which occurred between a student and teacher was instigated by the student after the teacher tried to stop him from behaving in violation of the school’s behavioural codes. 

The incident first came to public attention when a user posted a video showing a teacher and a student in the middle of a physical altercation. As more footage emerged, the narrative became increasingly contested: one video showed the teacher appearing aggressive, while another appeared to show two students confronting the teacher and attempting to snatch an item from his hand. One clip also showed the student landing a direct hit on the teacher.

Speaking to MV+, Addu High School Deputy Principal Hussain Fahmee said the incident escalated only after the student ignored instructions and behaved in a way that violated the school’s code of conduct. He confirmed that the altercation began when the teacher tried to intervene.

“The student first started the altercation when the teacher tried to stop him from doing something which went against the school’s code of conduct,” Fahmee said.

While the school did not specify what the student was doing, users on social media have alleged that that the student had been playing pornographic material on his phone.

“The teacher is also human, yeah? He tried to stop the student from behaving like that… These are 18-year-olds, not children, but the media is portraying the teacher as doing something terribly wrong when he was trying to stop the student from behaving like that,” he said.

Fahmee added that the Ministry of Education has taken action. The teacher involved has since been sent to Malé, and the school is now questioning students to determine exactly what happened.

He expressed concern about online reactions, saying that social media users appeared to be encouraging the student’s behaviour and targeting school staff without verifying facts.

“The media needs to be more professional and cover both sides. There has also been such wild speculation and allegations regarding the principal without investigating the truth,” he said.

He also disclosed that someone had contacted him asking for the teacher’s home address, stating they intended to assault him.

Fahmee said the school is now considering whether the student poses an ongoing threat and whether he should remain enrolled.

MV+ contacted the Ministry of Education to clarify what action has been taken regarding the incident, but the ministry has not responded.
