The national airline, Maldivian, has announced plans to launch direct flights between the Maldives and Australia, marking the first time a direct air connection will be established between the two countries.

The new service will operate from Melbourne in partnership with Australia’s travel company, Luxury Escapes, and is expected to strengthen tourism links and broader bilateral relations between the Maldives and Australia.

The route will be operated on a seasonal basis, with flights scheduled to commence in May. Maldivian has confirmed that the service will initially operate once a week.

The airline has stated that the Australia route will be integrated with Maldivian’s domestic flight and seaplane network, allowing passengers to connect seamlessly to destinations across the Maldives.

Maldivian has identified Australia as an important and growing tourism market, with the new direct service expected to contribute to an increase in visitor arrivals.

Tourism data indicates that, as of the 16th of this month, 40,490 Australian tourists have visited the Maldives, representing a 13 per cent increase compared to 35,818 arrivals during the same period last year. Australia is currently among the Maldives’ top ten tourism source markets.
