Police Officer Arrested and Suspended Over Drug Trafficking Allegations

The Maldives Police Service has arrested and suspended a police officer on allegations of drug use and drug trafficking in Thaa Atoll.
Police identified the officer as Mohamed Navaaz, 25, from Dhilaasaage, Thaa Atoll Hirilandhoo. Officers arrested him during an operation carried out this morning at the harbour of Thaa Atoll Vandhoo.

According to police, officers found five rubber packets containing substances suspected to be drugs inside a bear Navaaz was carrying. Police said they inspected the bear after noticing stitch marks, which raised suspicion that items had been concealed inside. A urine test conducted on Navaaz also returned positive results for drugs.
Police said the investigation into the case is ongoing. They confirmed that Navaaz has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
