All Schools to Receive Textbooks by 10 January, Says Education Minister

Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shaafiu has said the distribution of textbooks for the new academic year will be completed before 10 January.

The Ministry of Education began distributing textbooks on 6 December. Speaking to PSM News, Dr Ismail said distribution is under way, with books already delivered to more than 40 schools. He said all schools will receive textbooks by 10 January.

The minister added that work is also ongoing to distribute stationery vouchers to students. He said the ministry aims to complete these processes in time for report cards to be issued to students completing the academic year. The current academic year will end on Thursday, marking the start of the year-end holidays.

Dr Ismail said the ministry’s objective is to ensure all students receive textbooks before schools reopen. He also said schools are renovated annually ahead of the new academic year, noting that MVR 40 million has been allocated for preparations this year.

It is the government’s aim that all classrooms nationwide will be air-conditioned when the new academic year begins. Shaheed Ali School, developed in Hulhumalé Phase 2, will also commence classes in the new academic year.

The new academic year will begin on 27 January. According to the academic calendar, the mid-term break for the first term will run from 24 to 30 May, while holidays after the first term will be from 17 July to 1 August. The second term will begin on 2 August and end between 18 December and 12 January, with the 2027 school year scheduled to begin on 17 January.
