The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged Maldivians returning from Umrah to take precautions to prevent the spread of flu and viral infections.

With schools currently closed, a large number of people are travelling for Umrah, and health officials have noted that many pilgrims fall ill either during their journey or upon returning to the Maldives. The HPA has advised returnees to exercise extra care during the first days after arrival.

The agency has specifically highlighted that individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions should cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, wear masks while travelling, and wash their hands frequently with soap and water.

Additional guidance from the HPA includes avoiding crowded places if experiencing fever or cough, refraining from close contact with children while unwell, seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, or chest pain develop within 14 days of returning from Hajj or Umrah, and informing medical professionals of recent travel.

For those experiencing mild cold symptoms, the HPA recommends simple home care measures such as drinking plenty of fluids, getting adequate rest, and taking only paracetamol unless otherwise advised by a doctor.

According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, 7,726 Maldivians have travelled for Umrah between December and January. Pilgrims are expected to begin returning next week, and health facilities occasionally set up dedicated flu clinics during peak return periods.
