Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has confirmed that 56 hectares have been reclaimed from Rasmale’ Site A as part of a broader land reclamation initiative.

The project aims to reclaim a total of 1,009 hectares across Rasmale’, with 137.5 hectares designated for Site A, in an effort to address longstanding housing challenges in the country.

Work on Site A began on 1 December, with MACL reporting that one and a half hectares are dredged daily, resulting in 41 percent of the site being completed so far.

To accelerate progress across the twelve designated zones, the company deployed advanced dredging equipment, including the Cristóbal Colón, one of the world’s largest trailer suction hopper dredgers. Since its arrival in early December, reclamation has progressed at a rate exceeding one hectare per day, with 23 hectares completed within 18 days.

Following the completion of land reclamation, development will proceed according to the Rasmale’ Master Plan, which envisages an eco-city with full municipal infrastructure. The government is currently seeking a consultant to finalise the Master Plan and has confirmed that preparations are underway to open applications for housing schemes in Rasmale’.
